Sweet Potato and green peas vegetable fry

In this simple stir-fry recipe, sweet potato and green peas come together to create a sweet and spicy dish. Cooked in mustard oil with basic seasoning, this is a great dish to serve with flatbreads like paratha or as a side with rice and dal.

  • 2 tbsp mustard oil*
  • 1 pinch asafoetida (hing)
  • 2 tsp mustard seeds (rai)
  • 1 green chili , chopped
  • 2 cups sweet potatoes , peeled and chopped
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 2 tsp cumin powder
  • Salt , to taste
  • 1 cup green peas , defrosted or boiled if using fresh
  • 1 tsp chaat masala powder


  • Heat oil in a pan on high.
  • When the oil just starts to smoke reduce the heat to medium and add asafoetida and mustard seeds.
  • When the seeds start to crackle, add green chilies and sweet potatoes. Mix well and cook for about 2 minutes.
  • Add turmeric powder, cumin powder, and salt. Mix well so that all the potatoes are coated with the spices. Cook for about 2 minutes.
  • Add the green peas. Mix well and cook for about 5 minutes till the potatoes are soft. They should break easily with the spoon.
  • Add chaat masala. Mix well and serve hot with paratha or rice and dal.



    *I like the sharp flavor of mustard oil in this recipe, but you can use any other vegetable oil that you prefer.
